An excellent wedding photography eBook that I recently read offers all sorts of insights and helpful pointers on becoming a successful photographer. How To Photograph Weddings Portraits And Groups by Bobby Jones, is a great book to help you get started as a part-time photographer.
The eBook is divided into three main sections; package deal group photography, portraiture and wedding photography. The book uncovers many of the opportunities available as a part-time photographer, but emphasizes the income-boosting benefits of wedding photography. Digital wedding photography is especially popular and profitable.
In the beginning of the book, author Bobby Jones advises those interested in photography as a part-time career to seek out a professional photographer and get to know them and the way that they do business.
Practice makes perfect.
To become a good photographer it is essential that you take lots of shots. In the book, the author suggests that you “shoot lots of film (or if you prefer, digital frames) and critically analyze the results”, Jones, Bobby, p3.
First impressions are lasting impressions.
"There is a direct relationship between image management and profit." Jones lectures on the importance of first impressions and the way that you present yourself to others. He urges, "...dress as smartly as you can." Jones, Bobby p8.
A professional perception is the key to marketing your business.
Be prepared and know your equipment.
The book emphasizes the importance of gaining familiarity with your camera and accessories. The author explains the impact to your business when you are unprepared.
“ Nothing looks more unprofessional than fumbling with your camera controls whilst your subjects look on…”, Jones, Bobby, p3.
I have found it surprising the number of amateur photographers who are not familiar with at least 30 fine functions of his camera, and with a digital camera, probably more than 30 fine functions.
A professional approach is essential.
The book offers tips on shrugging off the old label of amateur and changing the way you perceive your work. "you must at all times project a professional attitude and practical approach," Jones, Bobby p. 7.
Package Deal Group Photography is one of the easiest ways to get started.
Jones explains the opportunities and the ease of work involved with Package Deal Group Photography and suggests starting with groups of adults. This can include sports teams, dance groups, pipe bands or church groups.
With the "...opportunity to shoot high volume work of a repetitive or duplicative nature, e.g. either lots of individuals or many individuals within one group. This type of photography allows you to pass on the savings...whilst still giving you the opportunity to make a good profit." Jones, Bobby, p8.
Use your group deals to market your business.
"Tell everyone!" is Jones reply to getting the word out that you are a part-time photographer. He gives tips on how to find your first group to photograph. He suggests offering potential customers group deals, attractive discounts or a free portrait.
“Keep in mind the idea of free sample works for many products in the market.” Jones, Bobby, p.10.
To help you get your business off on the right path, Bobby gives some helpful tips on utilizing some of the camera's functions as well as practical advice on achieving the best results.
Taking group photos is a great way to gain experience in the lucrative market of wedding photography.
His advice:
- Keep it simple.
- Make sure you have a good flash.
- Position the group in order to achieve professional results.
- Eliminate background distractions.
- Make sure everyone is ready.
A picture is worth a thousand words and a little bit of money, too.
Portraits are another profitable way to make money as a part-time photographer. In this section of the book, Jones emphasizes the need to establish a good relationship with your customer.
"sow the seeds of a long-term relationship with your customer for repeat business." Jones, Bobby p 30.
“You must relax and have fun during the photo shoot. This is a simple and effective technique to keep the session rolling smoothly.” Jones, Bobby, p.42.
When customers feel at ease and comfortable when sitting for their portrait, the end result is usually much more rewarding. A happy customer will be more inclined to use your services again. Keep in mind these same people may become repeat business for weddings, parties and events. All of these can be money-making opportunities that can give you a steady stream of income.
Wedding Photography means big business.
The author firmly believes that wedding photography is the most lucrative and exciting of the three types of photography opportunities mentioned. Becoming a wedding photographer takes some practice but Jones offers helpful advice and tips to help you in every phase of wedding photography.
“ Note that there are over 100 posed shots explained in the guide.” Jones Bobby, p.50.
Jones explains the techniques needed to capture these same poses, making it easy for you to prepare ahead of time for the big event. He offers expert advice on using a flash gun, a tripod and an exposure meter for best results.
